There are basically two different approaches to treating panic disorder. The first is medication. Cognative behavioral therapy is a process of panic disorder treatment that is mostly self-directed. You learn about the causes of panic attacks are. Armed with this knowledge you are more aware of the potentail triggers that can cause you to experience extreme anxiety.
Then when you do experience a panic attack you are better able to cope with the rising fear that is normally driven by a lack of understanding of the causes of your feelings. When you understand what is happening and are aware that the threat is really much less siginificant that it feels you can cope with those feelings much more easily.

These exercises center around controlled breathing. By imposing a structured, practiced and familiar physical process on your body you can reduce the anxiety you are feeling. Te process of asserting that kind of control leads your feelings of panic to subside which in turn proves that you are, in fact, in control.
Once you are aware that a panic attack can be treated with a simple process your fear of having a panic attack will diminish. Panic attack disorder is the result of high anxiety. So the next question is; what is anxiety and what causes high anxiety? The truth is understanding the causes of anxiety is the first step to effective panic disorder treatment.
Normal levels of anxiety are natural and generally harmless. The definition of anxiety is a state of fear created by the anticipation of an imagined or real threat or event. Typical anxiety is a natural and normal part of human life. Panic attacks are not.
For those who have never had a panic attack it is hard to really communicate the intensity of the fear and the reality of the physiological effects. Panic attack disorder can cause breathlessness, extreme dizziness, blurred vision, tingling and a general sense of overwhelming dread.
Often times, people who are experiencing a panic attack, especially for the first time, don’t understand what is happening to them so they assume they are ill. They feel on the verge of losing control which only heightens their anxiety and intensifies their panic disorder.
At the most basic level, the fight or flight response is the root cause of panic attack disorders. If you’ve had a panic attack then you know how closely the feelings mirror the typically reaction to a sudden threat.
Anxiety is a natural response to a perceived threat or danger. In that sense the purpose of anxiety is to protect yourself from real danger by giving you the energy and motivation to flee or defend against a potential source of harm. This is small comfort in the face of the fact that extreme anxiety is the root cause of panic attack disorder.
Your brain can’t distinguish between reality and your perceptions of reality. In fact, your experience of reality takes place entirely within your mind. With this in mind you can see how anxiety at perceived threats or events that may or may not be real can lead to excessive anxiety and panic attack disorder. The key to effective panic treatments is to learn how to manage your mental state to prevent normal anxiety from rising to the level of a panic attack.
